Hiking at Hill Country State Natural Area

Hill Country State Natural Area was once a working cattle ranch called Bar O Ranch. When owner Louise Merrick's husband passed away, she began donating the land to the state of Texas. She did have one request. That it "be kept far removed and untouched by modern civilization, where everything is preserved intact, yet put to a useful purpose." And it sure has!

Come with me on my hike at Hill Country State Natural Area, located west of San Antonio in Bandera, TX. My goal for this hike was to make it to the top of the West Peak Overlook. I've provided the route I took below if you'd like to check it out.

What's There to Do at Hill Country State Natural Area?

Hill Country State Natural Area is a beautiful place to visit if you'd like to surround yourself with spectacular hill country views. Make sure to bring a lot of water (as there is not a park store), and don't forget always to follow Leave No Trace principles.
