What is Falconhead West Primitive Park?
Falconhead West Primitive Park is a 145-acre natural preserve between Lakeway and Bee Cave, Texas. Developed using existing ranch roads and primitive trails to preserve the natural environment, it is nestled within a residential community.
The trails are divided into four color-coded segments, ranging from .5 to 1.5 miles, approximately 3.6 miles total.
Exploring the Falconhead West Primitive Trail
Activities to do at the park are the following:
Walking/Hiking
Trail running
Mountain biking
This is the perfect place to get a solid hike, practice for a backpacking trip, and enjoy nature. Before you come, you should know that no restrooms or drinking water are available (hence why it is called a primitive park).
Remember that you will see and walk alongside houses because this trail closely runs along a neighborhood. So, if you’re looking for a place that helps you feel like you are escaping from the world into nature, this might not be the trail for you. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit it!
Trail Conditions
The trail is gravely, rocky, and uneven throughout, so bring the proper gear to make you comfortable. There are clear trail markers, so you know which loop you are on, but use an app like AllTrails because it is easy to make a wrong turn without navigation.
This may not be the case when you go, but at the end of the yellow loop, there was flooding that looked like it was coming from the water tower. Be mindful of this! It is possible to pass the flooded parts by carefully walking on the sides of the trail.
If you need to take a break or catch your breath, there are several benches and trash cans in shaded areas.
What to See at Bee Cave/Falconhead West Primitive Park
You’ll see Hill Country views peaking in the distance throughout the trail and various flora like Ashe Juniper trees, yuccas, wildflowers, and cacti.
How to Prepare for this Hike?
Come packed with the following for a comfortable hike on the Falconhead trail:
Water
Snacks
Sunscreen
Sun hat or cap
For navigation, use this AllTrails route, and make sure to have a copy of the trail map before starting your hike in case you lose service. The map is also available to take a photo of at the trailhead.
